GUIDELINES FOR CERTIFICATION

Certification is completed under one of the following categories:  Cadastral Survey, Civil Survey, Drafting/GIS and Photogrammetry/Remote Sensing

 

The following is a guideline on qualifications required for Certification with ASSMT from Technician to Senior Technologist in Cadastral and Civil surveying only. 

 

 

TECHNICIAN (Survey Assistant/Chainperson/Rodperson)

 

Skills Required: A Technician shall:

 

(a) Understand basic survey principles and the degree of accuracy required for each separate project.

 

(b) Be able to chain or measure on flat ground and chain or measure on sloped ground by proper use of a plumb-bob. The ability to slope chain will also be required.

 

(c) Must understand the principles of transferring elevations from one point to another.

 

(d) Must be able to set up a Level on level or sloped ground and know proper care and handling of the instrument.

 

(e) Must know the proper use of a rod, how to select appropriate turning points and related terminology.

 

(f) Must be able to set up a Theodolite or Total Station on level or sloped ground in five minutes or less (preferably). Will have a basic understanding of Theodolite and Total Station operations and what measurements they take. Proper care and handling of the instrument. Be able to use a plumbing pole.

 

(g) Must know the proper method of producing line, interlining with Total Station, taking line, giving a plumb-bob shot for a backsight and plumbing proper backsights.

 

(h) Be able to recognize and know the proper care and use of Prisms, Tri-bracs,, pipe locators and related survey equipment.

 

Qualifications:

 

(a) A Diploma from a Technical school recognized by the Society in Geomatics / Civil Engineering or a related Technology. A letter of reference from a Professional Surveyor / Professional Engineer / Technologist or Senior Technologist certified by the ASSMT or related sister organization or a person with appropriate academic qualifications recognized by the Society and the certification board. (STANDARD LETTER OF REFERENCE) SLR.

 

Or

(b) Grade 10 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and hold certificates in the following NAIT or SAIT courses approved by the ASSMT. --- Survey Assistant--- Basic Survey Calculations--- Leveling--- Basic Total Station. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(c) Grade 10 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and holding a certificate from NAIT or SAIT in the Survey Assistant Course approved by the ASSMT and one year progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Technician. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(d) Grade 10 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and two years progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Technician. A SLR is also required.

 

 

SENOIR TECHNICIAN (Instrument Man / Jr. Party Chief)

 

Skills Required: A Senior Technician shall:

 

(a) Have all the skills required to be certified as a Technician.

 

(b) Have an in depth understanding of survey principles and be able to communicate the degree of accuracy required on any project to technicians.

 

(c) Must be proficient at levelling; including taking notes, running circuits, reducing notes, calculating cuts and fills to design grades and two peg testing a level.

 

(d) Must be proficient at running a Total Station or Theodolite; including taking notes, producing line, giving line, interlining, measuring angles, measuring distances, using the computer capabilities of the Total Station and operate a Data Recorder.

 

(e) Have the ability to do basic survey calculations eg. Understand the difference between angles and azimuths and add or subtract them. Basic trigonometry, and understand and be able to use the coordinate system.

 

Qualifications:

 

(a) See Qualifications for Technician. The Society also requires two years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technician. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(b) Grade 10 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and holding certificates in the following NAIT or SAIT courses approved by the ASSMT. ---Basic Survey Calculations---Levelling---Field Notes---Advanced Total Station. The Society also requires two years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technician. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(c) Grade 10 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and four years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technician. A SLR is also required.

 

 

TECHNOLOGIST (Senior Party Chief / Office Related Duties)

 

Skills Required: A Technologist shall:

 

(a) Have all the skills required to be certified as a Senior Technician.

 

(b) Have an in depth and detailed understanding of survey principles and can communicate them and the degree of accuracy required for any project to Technicians and Senior Technician’s.

 

(c) Have the ability to do advanced calculations including curve, curve and straight line. Intersections, closure and closure balancing, as well as area calculations. Experience with MicroSurvey, MicroStation or related COGO based software is required.

 

(d) Posses the ability to manage field or office operations in a limited capacity.

 

Qualifications:

 

(a) See Qualifications for a Technician. The Society also requires three years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Technologist. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(b) Completion of grade 12 or the equivalent recognized by the Society and holding certificates in the following NAIT or SAIT courses approved by the ASSMT. ---Advanced Total Station---Advanced Calculations---Field notes--- (GPS RTK may also be required). The Society also requires five years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Technologist. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(c) Completion of grade 12 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and ten years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Technologist. A SLR is also required.

 

 

SENIOR TECHNOLOGIST: (Project Management)

 

Skills Required: A Senior Technologist shall:

 

(a) Have all the skills required to be certified as a Technologist.

 

(b) Be able to manage projects from beginning to end: supervising personnel, resolving problems, maintaining quality control, coordinating field operations and meeting project deadlines.

 

(c) Excellent communication skills are required both written and verbal. Interpersonal and dispute resolving skills are also required.

 

Qualifications:

 

(a) See qualifications for Technician. The Society also requires eight years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technologist. Courses in management, customer relations and problem resolving are also desired. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(b) Completion of grade 12 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and holding certificates in the following NAIT or SAIT courses approved by the ASSMT. ---Advanced calculations---Advanced Total Station---GPS RTK. Courses in management, customer relations and problem resolving are also desired. The Society also requires fifteen years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technologist. A SLR is also required.

 

Or

(c) Completion of grade 12 high school or the equivalent recognized by the Society and twenty years of progressive documented experience culminating with the skills of a Senior Technologist. A SLR is also required.

 

 

REGISTERED SURVEY TECHNOLOGIST (Limited Scope Of Practice)

 

Skills Required: A Registered Survey Technologist shall:

 

(a) Have all the skills to be certified as a Senior Technologist.

 

Qualifications:

 

(a) Have a limited scope of practice mutually agreed to by ASSMT and the ALSA.
